I wish I could share it with my friends and family too! I try to explain some of the topics we discuss in class and then I can't think of where to start! We talk about so much in one day!

Krystle,

I think that now that we know how tracking can effect our children's lives it is important that we as teachers are sensitive to our children's needs. We should be able to give them the help that they need to succeed without limiting their ability with a label they will strive to fit into.

Hi Krystle...this is Jessica G.

I can kind of agree with you about not really wanting to discuss homosexuality in the class. I say that because I am not sure what my views are on homosexuality. I know that it is not for me personaly and that it is against my religion but I don't judge anybody if that's what they choose to do. I don't on the other hand want to feel like I'm going against my religion and promoting homosexuality amongst my students....

As we all seemed to acknowledge this week, we still have a far way to go before we can say the mission that Dr. King lead is completed. I agree with you. The best thing we can do is commit ourselves to teaching to the utmost of our abilities. This will require that we learn from Ghandi, Dr. King and the children and try to match their commitment to the communities they lived in. The good thing is that we will not be alone in our fight to bring about equality within schools. Here we go!

I felt the same way about all of the experiences on Auburn Avenue as well as at the King Center. Perhaps once we're teaching in the Atlanta-area schools we can organize a community of volunteers to help restore some of the establishments on Sweet Auburn. This could be an opportunity for us to give back to the community and it's heritage as well as allowing children to experience the joy of making a difference in the community and the lives of others.

Hi Krystle this is Jessica G.

I the activity we did downstairs also. What really stood out to me is that while we were moving I was never concerned about anyone but the 2 or 3 people directly beside me. As long as we were moving together i never really noticed what was going on down the line. I realized after the activity was over where everybody else was and it made me realize that is probably why most people DONT see their privileges. As long as the people around them are on the same level as them they really arent worried about anybody else or the fact that other people may be falling behind. It bothers me because I have done that for the majority of my life. As long as it didnt affect my comfort zone in middle class, it wasn't my problem. I'm so glad that i got into this program because it is really going to help me make a difference in the world.

Hi Krystle,

I agree with you - I really got a lot out from doing the "privilege walk" and the Blue Eyes documentary. It definitely made me aware of how different things are for people in this country.

See you tomorrow,

I don't think I've ever been able to discuss such sensitive or controversial issues like the ones we talk about in class with a diverse group of people. It's interesting to hear all the different perspectives. Sometimes I wonder though if I still self-censor myself. I also wonder if the rest of the class does too, because I've noticed that there aren't many comments on peoples' blogs.
